Applying Human-Centered Data Science to Healthcare: Hyperlocal Modeling of COVID-19 Hospitalizations
(Companion Proceedings of the 2023 ACM International Conference on Supporting Group Work, 2023) Chui, Victoria; Pater, Jessica; Toscos, Tammy; Guha, Shion
Algorithms as a component of decision-making in healthcare are becoming increasingly prevalent and AI in healthcare has become a topic of mass consideration. However, pursuing these methods without a human-centered framework can lead to bias, thus incorporating discrimination on behalf of the algorithm upon implementation. By examining each step of the design process from a human-centered perspective and incorporating stakeholder motivations, algorithmic implementation can become vastly useful, and more accurately tailored to stakeholder needs. We examine previous work in healthcare executed with a human-centered design, to analyze the multiple frameworks which effectively create human-centered application, as extended to healthcare.

We All Have Skin, We All Have Blood, We Are All Human": Creating Discourse among Different Conceptualizations of Europe with an Interactive Art Installation"
(Companion Proceedings of the 2023 ACM International Conference on Supporting Group Work, 2023) Weibert, Anne; Oertel Ribeiro, Nora; Aal, Konstantin; Rüller, Sarah
This work studies the creation process of an interactive art installation. Set in a mid-sized city in Germany, it deployed crafting and making as techniques to explore and different conceptualizations of Europe through art form. Findings indicate that the interplay of haptic crafting elements and digital techniques can serve as an entry-point to otherwise abstract topics. The creation process as well as the display of the artwork as part of an exhibition in a museum was able to foster discourse about different political ideas, experiences of exclusion and discrimination, but also of hope and opportunities.

VR-Explorer: A Demonstration of a Virtual Reality Interactive Data Exploration System
(Companion Proceedings of the 2023 ACM International Conference on Supporting Group Work, 2023) Haoyun, Li; Yukun, Cao; Xie, Xike
Interactive Data Exploration (IDE) is a common way to comprehend large volume datasets, which can help user gradually discover his/er data interest. The core idea of IDE is discovering user’s data interest through multiple rounds of user interactions, such as labelling data tuples. However, there is still a gap between IDE and users, especially the lack of user interactivity research and data representation design. In this work, we designed and implemented VR-Explorer, an virtual reality interactive system on data exploration that connects IDE with VR technology. We designed virtual interactive interfaces for each exploration step according to the workflow of IDE and demonstrated the good usability of VR-Explorer through a study.

just like Therapy!": Investigating the Potential of Storytelling in Online Postpartum Depression Communities"
(Companion Proceedings of the 2023 ACM International Conference on Supporting Group Work, 2023) Progga, Farhat Tasnim; Rubya, Sabirat
One in seven women encounter postpartum depression upon transitioning to motherhood. Many of them frequently seek social support in online support groups. We conducted a mixed-methods formative research to assess the potential of digital storytelling on those online platforms. We observed that mothers acquire social support from online groups through storytelling. We present design recommendations for online postpartum depression (PPD) communities to utilize storytelling in fostering emotional support and providing relevant information and education through storytelling.

Drones, Phones, and Stones: Initial Testing of a Role-Based, Computer-Supported Approach to Collaborative Cemetery Indexing
(Companion Proceedings of the 2023 ACM International Conference on Supporting Group Work, 2023) Rubinstein, Jacob; Engel, Don
After project organizers used a drone to create a high-resolution aerial map of a historic cemetery, sets of volunteers served in four distinct, interdependent roles to photograph, research, restore, and geospatially index the cemetery’s many unrecorded interments. Here, we share observations from our initial tests of this approach, which included a visit of volunteers for synchronous on-site work. We explore the differences in volunteer behavior and performance relative to organizer expectations and how the interdependence of the four roles is impacted by these differences.

Towards a Trajectory Analysis of Wheelchair in an Indian Context
(Companion Proceedings of the 2023 ACM International Conference on Supporting Group Work, 2023) Tuteja, Kanika; Colombino, Tommaso; Tixier, Matthieu
Our research investigates the trajectory of a wheelchair based on an observational fieldwork study in India. The fieldwork comprises four months of observational studies and interviews of different environments, including house visits, rehabilitation centers, surgical shops, hospital settings, and production houses. The thematic analysis describes an artifact proceeding through various stages, from production, acquisition, use, and discarding of the assistive device. To understand the challenges faced by people with a physical impairment, we examine the crucial decision points in the trajectory and put the user on the spot. Drawing on the fieldwork, we describe the elements involved that may or may not allow the users to make confident decisions, such as cost, retrofitting, etc., and how often it is too late to re-consider the choices made in the first place. We are interested in the diverse backgrounds and viewpoints of the other actors involved in the process, and the aim is to present the complexity of the whole ecosystem of the artifact.

AI Story Relay: A Collaborative Writing of Design Fiction to Investigate Artificial Intelligence Design Considerations
(Companion Proceedings of the 2023 ACM International Conference on Supporting Group Work, 2023) Im, Hyeonjeong; Jeon, Soobin; Cho, Haena; Shin, Sungyong; Choi, Dasom; Hong, Hwajung
Artificial intelligence (AI) continuously evolves its level of complexity as it interacts with users. To address the unexpected outcomes of AI, developers desire to communicate with prospective users and reflect their opinions in the AI design pipeline. In this paper, we introduce the “AI story relay,” a method by which the AI developer and users collaboratively construct a design fiction in a relay for AI design considerations. To explore the method’s potential that encourages communication between AI developers and users, we conducted a case study of an AI-based coaching service. We expect AI story relay to contribute to fostering a dynamic exchange of views between developers and prospective users.

Articulating Institutionalization: How U.S. Academic Faculty Organize Work to Deposit Data and the Impacts on Long-Term Research Data Sustainability
(Companion Proceedings of the 2023 ACM International Conference on Supporting Group Work, 2023) Bratt, Sarah Elaine
With the ‘data deluge’ leading to an institutionalized research environment for data management, U.S. academic faculty have increasingly faced pressure to make data suitable for deposit into research data repositories, which, in turn, is engendering a new set of practices to adapt federal policy to local circumstances. When these practices involve reorganizing workflows to align the goals of local and institutional stakeholders, we might call them ‘data articulations.’ This dissertation uses interviews to establish a grounded understanding of the data articulations behind deposit in 3 essays: (1) a phenomenological study of genomics faculty data management practices; (2) a grounded theory study developing a theory of data deposit as articulation work; (3) a comparative case study identifying the factors associated with ‘articulating institutionalization’ in high-institutionalization and low-institutionalization of data deposit contexts. Expected findings include a framework of datarticulations and empirical insight into how faculty organize data management work.

Virtual Community Building for Supporting Women in Developing and Sustaining Their Professional Identities
(Companion Proceedings of the 2023 ACM International Conference on Supporting Group Work, 2023) Sengupta, Subhasree
The establishment of one’s professional identity can be essential to one’s sense of worth. For women, such challenges can be further magnified owing to the need to perform traditional roles along with sustaining a professional career. Thus, having virtual spaces to connect with others facing similar travails can help to build community and strategies for endurance. In keeping with this goal, through a three part mixed methods investigation that employs quantitative and qualitative analysis, my dissertation work seeks to understand how virtual communities are helping or can be designed to help support women as they pursue their professional aspirations.

Black Innovation: Creating and Appropriating Technology to Survive and Thrive
(Companion Proceedings of the 2023 ACM International Conference on Supporting Group Work, 2023) Klassen, Shamika
Taking tech to task means more than pointing out the problems and injustices. My research will seek solutions and innovative ways to create and reimagine technology that will better serve historically disenfranchised communities. In addition to learning about how technology has fallen short for those communities, I also want to learn how such communities create and appropriate technology for themselves. This requires engaging with equitable design practices. I also want to incorporate Afrofuturism as a design probe into the participatory design speculation that I aspire to facilitate in order to bring out rich responses and visceral contributions from participants.
