- Journal ArticleA Tale of Two Toolkits: Relating Infrastructure and Use in Flexible CSCW Toolkits(Computer Supported Cooperative Work (CSCW): Vol. 9, No. 1, 36586) Dourish, Paul; Edwards, W. KeithThe design of software toolkitsembodies a fundamental tension. On the one hand, itaims to reduce programmer effort by providingprefabricated, reusable software modules encapsulatingcommon application behaviours. On the other, it seeksto support a range of applications, which necessitatesavoiding an overly-restrictive commitment toparticular styles of application behaviour. We explore this tension in the domain of collaborativeapplications, which we believe are particularlysubject to problems arising from this tension. Basedon an analysis of the basic issues of flexibility intoolkit design, we explore opportunities for thedesign of toolkits which avoid application style commitments, with illustrations from two toolkits whichwe have developed. A comparative analysis of these twoapproaches provides insight into the underlyingquestions and suggests new design opportunities fortoolkits that provide a framework for applicationenhancement and extension.
- Conference PaperCollaboration Success Factors in an Online Music Community(Proceedings of the 2018 ACM International Conference on Supporting Group Work, 2018) Calefato, Fabio; Iaffaldano, Giuseppe; Lanubile, FilippoOnline communities have been able to develop large, open-source software (OSS) projects like Linux and Firefox throughout the successful collaborations carried out by their members over the Internet. However, online communities also involve creative arts domains such as animation, video games, and music. Despite their growing popularity, the factors that lead to successful collaborations in these communities are not entirely understood. In this paper, we present a study on creative collaboration in a music community where authors write songs together by overdubbing, that is, by mixing a new track with an existing audio recording. We analyzed the relationship between song- and author-related measures and the likelihood of a song being overdubbed. We found that recent songs, as well as songs with many reactions, are more likely to be overdubbed authors with a high status in the community and a recognizable identity write songs that the community tends to build upon.
- Text DocumentCross-Organizational Information Reuse: A Third Vision of Collaborative Memory in the Enterprise(Proceedings of the 2009 ACM International Conference on Supporting Group Work, 2009) White, Kevin F.Small organizations are facing a knowledge predicament as they operate with increasingly sparse pools of employees that must support a broad range of organizational needs. With reduced human resources comes limited time to devote to ancillary work tasks such as documentation. When no local memory system is available, organizations resort to Internet-based repositories. Though these sources contain nearly limitless information they do so at the cost of rich local context. To bridge the gap between internal and Internet-based memory systems this research explores a third vision; one which establishes virtual partnerships between small organizations. Using ethnographic methods this field study examines the: socio-technical ramifications of cross-organizational information reuse, relevance of information developed by partner organizations, and system tools that support efficient cross-organizational knowledge flow.
