Designing Social Memory Artifacts in a Smart Home
(Proceedings of the 2016 ACM International Conference on Supporting Group Work, 2016) Jones, Jasmine
Memory is shaped by the media in which it is communicated (van Dijck, 2007). In a world where people live enmeshed with computing technologies, there are myriad opportunities to enrich and enhance everyday life with new kinds of memory. In my dissertation research, I employ a mixed methods interpretivist approach to investigate how people relate to and revisit memories of their past, how families collectively interact with shared memory, and how pervasive ubicomp" technologies can be designed to support and enhance the social activities of sharing family memory across generations."

A Survey of Personal and Household Scheduling
(Proceedings of the 2005 ACM International Conference on Supporting Group Work, 2005) Brush, A.J. Bernheim; Turner, Tammara Combs
We describe results from a survey of employees at Microsoft about how they manage personal and household scheduling. We saw a much greater use of digital calendars than we expected. Of our 621 respondents, 51% (317) used their digital calendar at work as the calendar where most of their personal and household events were recorded, while 38% (233) of respondents primarily used paper calendars. We discuss reasons respondents gave for choosing a particular type of calendar as well as challenges faced by respondents in scheduling events for themselves and their households.

Toward Technologies That Support Family Reflections on Health
(Proceedings of the 2009 ACM International Conference on Supporting Group Work, 2009) Grimes, Andrea; Tan, Desney; Morris, Dan
Previous research has explored how technology can motivate healthy living in social groups such as friends and coworkers. However, little research has focused on the implications of collecting, sharing, and reflecting upon health information within families. To explore this domain, we conducted a study that consisted of a week-long journaling activity followed by semi-structured interviews and formative design activities with 15 families (66 people). We identified four areas in which these practices are unique in a family context. Based on these findings we propose preliminary considerations for technologies that effectively support family reflections on health data.
